I fear I may have come over all Lynne Truss like. Hands up who can spot what's wrong with this sign above a well known gentlemen's outfitters in central Plymouth.
That's it, there is no apostrophe between the "r" and the "s" in "officers" (or, indeed, after the "s" which would be equally valid). The lack of apostrophe makes the word "club" into a verb. So what I'd like to know is precisely what are the officers clubbing? Baby seals?
The sign writer and shop owners doubtless meant the outfitters to be called "The Officers' Club" as in a club for officers, a place to meet for the better class of gentleman. That is not, however, what they've achieved by failing to observe basic grammar.
Pedantry can be such fun.
